Janelle Maas embodies the Coastal Minimalist lifestyle through her photography style. Her unique opportunity to live at the Point Loma lighthouse is shared in her collection, along with her other travels along both coasts.
Artist Statement
My interest in photography began on a trip to East Africa while in college. After taking a few photography classes, I quickly realized I had found my passion and relocated to my home town of Santa Barbara, CA to attend Brooks Institute of Photography.
As the wife of a Coast Guard officer, our life has taken us from one coast to the other and we have been stationed in San Diego twice. Most recently, we were fortunate enough to live at the New Point Loma Lighthouse at the tip of Point Loma. I am honored to share some of my images of our time at the lighthouse as well as images from other parts of the country in which we have lived.
Over the past 20 years I have worked as a photojournalist, a wedding and portrait photographer, and a freelance photographer. My work has been featured in the New York Times, The Santa Barbara News Press, The Santa Barbara Daily Sound, and Pacific San Diego Magazine. Some of my work is captured digitally and some is captured traditionally using a medium format Hasselblad film camera.
My goal is to find beauty in unexpected places and use my camera to share it with others.
